What is SBO?
Safety Behavioral Observation (SBO) is a proactive approach used here at MAERSK safety management. It involves systematically observing and recording employees' behaviors to identify unsafe practices and potential hazards. By focusing on behaviors rather than outcomes, SBO aims to create a proactive safety culture where potential issues are addressed before they result in accidents or injuries.
Our Objective/Purpose
The objective of SBO is to promote safety, eliminate hazards, and prevent injuries by influencing employees to act towards safer outcomes by preventing accidents or injury before it occurs. This also helps to detect and correct unsafe acts and unsafe conditions to prevent possible accidents. We aim to create a safety culture in the workplace.
Who?
MERSK employees, contracted personnel, truckers, visitors, contractors, principals and other stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the SBO Program.

SBO Process
Observation
Trained observers watch employees as they perform their tasks, noting both safe and unsafe behaviors.
Recording
Observers document their findings, including details about the behaviors observed and the context in which they occurred.
Feedback
Observers provide immediate, constructive feedback to employees, reinforcing safe practices and addressing unsafe behaviors.
Analysis
Data from observations are analyzed to identify trends, common hazards, and areas for improvement.
Action
Based on the analysis, targeted interventions, training programs, and changes to procedures or policies are implemented to enhance overall safety.
